Item Description
The world is ending, and you still have plans for Thursday night. That collision of stakes is the hook of Eternights, the debut game from independent developer Studio Sai, which splices a relationship-building life sim onto a real-time action RPG and dares you to make both work before time runs out. It starts almost comically small: your best friend Chani is helping you polish a dating-app profile when a mysterious event turns most of the population into faceless, mindless husks, and the two of you are pulled into a desperate fight to survive.
From there, every day on the calendar is a decision. Story deadlines loom, and the days and nights between them have to be split between pushing into monster-filled labyrinths and spending time with the people around you. Relationships run on a Bond system, and nights are when you train and talk with companions such as Chani and pop star Yuna. It is a Persona-style rhythm squeezed into a tighter package, and the countdown gives even small conversations real weight, because every evening spent with one friend is an evening not spent with another.
Combat is fast hack-and-slash rather than menus. You read telegraphed attacks, dodge at the last moment, build combos and call in party members for elemental strikes that shatter a boss's protective barrier, with quick-time finishes for the big moments. Defeated enemies drop Essence that unlocks new skills for you and your allies, and deeper bonds unlock stronger abilities, so a quiet evening with someone pays off in the next dungeon. Critics singled out the thoughtful, surprisingly layered cast and the inclusive romance options as the heart of the experience.
Eternights is the kind of small, ambitious project that wins a loyal audience because it commits so fully to its odd premise: a game about deciding who matters to you when the clock is running out, wrapped in a monster-slaying adventure. It is short enough to finish in a few evenings and personal enough that your choices about who to spend time with shape how it ends, which makes it a distinctive pick on a PS5 shelf crowded with bigger names.
