Item Description

Turn the volume up and ESPN National Hockey Night sounds like a broadcast. Stormfront Studios' 1994 Sega CD hockey game, published by Sony Imagesoft, used the CD format for something cartridges of the day could only hint at: the voice of Bill Clement, ESPN's own hockey analyst, calling the play-by-play while the action unfolds on the ice.

Every NHL team of the era is here, though the game carried no players' license, so the rosters lack the real names that EA's NHL series could offer. What it offers instead is flexibility. You can view the rink horizontally, the classic side-on broadcast angle, or vertically for a north-south look at the ice, and four modes cover the bases: Exhibition for a quick game, Challenge, Playoff and a full Season, with backup saving so a long campaign can be picked up again later.

That combination of real team branding, a television presentation and a choice of perspectives is what sets it apart from the crowded field of early-1990s hockey games. It arrived at a time when sports titles were racing to feel more like the broadcasts fans watched at home, and the ESPN name and Clement's commentary put it squarely in that race. Two-player support makes it a natural fit for head-to-head games on the couch.

On a Sega CD shelf it makes a fascinating pairing with EA's NHL '94 disc, one game built on star power and the other on the feel of a network broadcast. It is a snapshot of sports gaming evolving in real time in the mid-1990s, and a fun way to settle a rivalry with a friend when the classic cartridge hockey games have been played to exhaustion.

About the game

ESPN National Hockey Night was one of the many hockey games released back in the day. This one featured all the NHL teams for its time, but lacked an official players license. It had four game modes to choose from: Exhibition, Challenge, Playoff, and Season. The game also features both a horizontal and vertical perspective of the ice, battery backup to save progress and also featured the voice of Bill Clement for play-by-play commentary.
