Item Description
Ertai's story is one of Magic's great falls. The gifted, arrogant young wizard of the Weatherlight saga was left behind on Rath, and when he resurfaced in Planeshift he had been remade by Phyrexia into something cold and terrible. Ertai, the Corrupted puts that transformation into card form: a 3/4 Phyrexian Human Wizard in white, blue and black whose power comes from feeding his allies to the machine.
For one blue mana, you tap Ertai and sacrifice a creature or enchantment to counter target spell, any spell. In an Esper Commander deck that is a standing threat your opponents have to play around every turn, and it gets nastier when you have spare creature tokens or an enchantment that has already done its job to throw away. Few commanders let you hold a counterspell on the battlefield without ever keeping a card in hand.
This is the Secret Lair Drop printing, collector number 1216, a borderless card illustrated by Sidharth Chaturvedi, in step-and-compleat foil. That finish lays a repeating pattern of Phyrexian symbols across the foil, an unsettling, fitting touch for a hero swallowed by Phyrexia.
