Magic: The Gathering single: Engineered Explosives, from Modern Masters. Our grade: Lightly Played or better. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.
Item Description
Engineered Explosives is a precision tool disguised as a bomb. You choose X when you cast it, and sunburst gives it one charge counter for each color of mana spent, so a three-color deck can set it to zero, one, two or three. Later, pay two and sacrifice it to destroy every nonland permanent with mana value equal to the number of counters.
That flexibility has kept it a favorite of constructed players for years. Cast for zero, it sweeps away tokens and zero-cost artifacts; set at one or two, it surgically clears a swarm of cheap creatures, mana rocks or enchantments while leaving your own pricier threats untouched. Because the counters come from colors rather than raw mana, it rewards deck builders who plan their mana carefully, and in Commander and cube it is a clever answer to token armies and cheap artifact swarms. Every time it hits the table, opponents have to count the counters before committing anything to the board.
Engineered Explosives debuted in Fifth Dawn in 2004. This is the Modern Masters printing, collector number 204, illustrated by Lars Grant-West, in non-foil, from the 2013 set that launched Magic's Masters reprint line.
