Technosoft built its name on the Thunder Force starfighters, so it comes as a pleasant surprise that a standout among its Genesis shooters puts you on foot. Elemental Master is a vertically scrolling shooter starring Laden, the strongest sorcerer in the kingdom of Lorelei, who marches up the screen hurling elemental magic at everything in his path instead of piloting a ship.
The story has more bite than most shooters bother with. Aryaag, a sorcerer the kingdom trusted, has betrayed the king and unleashed the power of the evil Gyra, and when Laden moves to stop him, Aryaag reveals himself as Laden's own brother, Roki. Banished from home, Laden sets out to break Gyra's hold on the land, which turns the climb toward the final confrontation into a family reckoning as much as a crusade.
The twist that makes it play differently is direction. Laden can fire either up or down the screen, so enemies that slip in behind you are both a threat and a target, and the elemental spells at your disposal change how you tackle each wave and boss. You also choose the order of the first four stages, which lets you plan a route and gives repeat runs some variety before the final stretch. Critics at the time praised its presentation and level design, though several found it on the easy side, which today makes it a welcoming door into a genre known for punishing newcomers.
Then there is the music. Toshiharu Yamanishi, who also worked on Thunder Force III and IV, wrote the score, and it carries the hard-driving synth-rock energy that made Technosoft's sound on Sega's 16-bit hardware so distinctive; one of its tracks was later remixed for the studio's pinball game Dragon's Fury. Shooter players who already have the Thunder Force games on the shelf will find this the fantasy-flavored sibling that rounds out the Technosoft collection.
Gyra has usurped the throne, and his minions are pillaging and plundering throughout the countryside. The kingdom is doomed unless someone can stop this madness and restore order to the land. You are the ELEMENTAL MASTER, and you're the only person with the power to put an end to Gyra's reign of terror. Harnessing the power of the elements fire, water, wind, and the earth you use them as your very own weapons to fight all that is evil in the world. You'll be up against Gyra's most ruthless henchmen as you battle through eight levels of intense action. But you've got the power of magic on your side, and if you can master the five spells at your disposal, you'll be a nearly unstoppable force. Of course, when you're single-handedly taking on an entire army, the odds are stacked against you. But with the power of the elements, you're the only one who can stop Gyra and his army.
