"Hey, you. You're finally awake." Few openings in gaming are as instantly recognizable as that cart ride into Helgen, a prisoner on the way to the headsman's block until a black dragon tears through the sky and changes everything. From there, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim hands you an entire frozen province and very few instructions, and the freedom of that moment is what has kept players coming back for well over a decade.
You are the Dragonborn, a mortal born with a dragon's soul, able to absorb the power of slain dragons and learn the Thu'um, the shouts that turn words into raw force. The Greybeards wait atop High Hrothgar to teach you, the World-Eater Alduin threatens to end the world, and a civil war between the Stormcloaks and the Empire splits every hold. And that is before the side paths: the Companions in Whiterun, the College of Winterhold, the Thieves Guild in Riften and the Dark Brotherhood's chilling invitation. Character growth is wonderfully simple: use a skill and you get better at it, so your hero becomes whatever you actually spend your time doing.
Bethesda Game Studios filled every valley with something to find, from Nordic barrows full of draugr to ruined Dwemer cities deep underground, and Jeremy Soule's soaring score makes even a long walk between towns feel epic. The Switch version includes the Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn add-ons, which bring vampire lords, homesteads to build and a trip to the island of Solstheim.
Skyrim on Switch has a few tricks of its own. Motion controls let you swing a sword, draw a bow and pick locks with the Joy-Con, and tapping a Legend of Zelda amiibo can unlock the Master Sword, Hylian Shield and Champion's Tunic, a crossover that never stops being delightful. Most of all, it shrinks a role-playing world this vast into something you can pick up on the couch, explore a single cave on your lunch break and still lose an entire weekend to.
