Elden Ring is FromSoftware's open-world action RPG, directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki with mythology written by novelist George R. R. Martin, and published by Bandai Namco in 2022. It took everything the studio learned from Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro and set it loose in a world without walls.
You play as one of the Tarnished, exiles called back to a shattered land to claim the title of Elden Lord, and how you go about it is almost entirely up to you. Torrent, a spectral steed summoned with a whistle, lets you cross fields, leap cliffs and outrun trouble. Spirit Ashes call ghostly allies into hard fights, Ashes of War let you swap special skills onto your weapons, and the build possibilities stretch from heavy-armored knights to sorcerers and faith-powered paladins. Stuck on a boss? Ride somewhere else, explore a catacomb, level up and come back stronger.
The world is dense with secrets. Underground rivers open into vast starlit caverns, unassuming wells lead to entire hidden regions, and sprawling legacy dungeons such as Stormveil Castle and the academy of Raya Lucaria reward careful exploration with shortcuts and treasure. The demigod bosses, among them Godrick the Grafted, Starscourge Radahn and the infamous Malenia, are some of the most spectacular fights FromSoftware has ever designed, and beating one is the kind of victory people talk about for years.
Elden Ring won Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2022 and has sold more than 20 million copies, bringing the studio's notoriously demanding style to a far wider audience than ever before. It proved a punishing action RPG could also be the most generous open world of its generation, and a second journey through the Lands Between is just as rewarding as the first, because there is always a cave, a catacomb or a hidden boss the first run walked straight past.
