Item Description
Elbrus, the Binding Blade is a sword with a demon trapped inside, and every hit you land brings that demon closer to breaking free. On the front, it's a seven-mana legendary Equipment that gives the equipped creature +1/+0 and equips for just one mana. When the equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, Elbrus unattaches and transforms into Withengar Unbound.
Withengar is the payoff: a 13/13 legendary Demon with flying, intimidate and trample. Better still, whenever a player loses the game, he gets thirteen more +1/+1 counters, which makes him terrifying in multiplayer Commander, where every eliminated opponent leaves him bigger for the next. Connect once with an evasive creature, flip the sword, and you have a game-ending threat that most blockers can't touch. The front face's flavor text, “Those who grasp its hilt soon hear the demon's call,” sets the tone perfectly.
This is the From the Vault: Transform printing, collector number 8, illustrated by Eric Deschamps, in foil. From the Vault: Transform gathered transforming double-faced cards in foil, and Elbrus, first printed in Dark Ascension, brings Innistrad's gothic horror to the collection as one of its mythics.
