Item Description

Long before the crowdfunding campaign of 2020, Yoshitaka Murayama gave JRPG fans Suikoden and its unforgettable promise: recruit 108 stars of destiny and build a castle full of heroes. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is that promise renewed. Murayama and fellow Suikoden veterans formed Rabbit & Bear Studios to make it, with director Osamu Komuta and artist Junko Kawano on board, and Murayama sadly passed away shortly before its 2024 release, which makes this a fitting final statement from one of the genre's great storytellers.

The war at its heart begins with a friendship. Nowa, a young man from tiny Grum County, joins the League's watch on an expedition alongside Seign, a lieutenant of the Galdean Empire, which has learned to amplify the magic of rune-lenses. When the Empire's ambitions turn the continent of Allraan toward war, their paths split, and Nowa ends up leading a resistance that grows into a full army. More than one hundred recruitable characters join along the way, many tucked behind optional quests and secrets, and none of them can be permanently missed.

Battles field six characters at once in front and back rows, and discovering which allies unlock powerful team-up attacks is a constant pleasure. Runes slot into each character as they level, bosses carry their own gimmicks to solve, and large-scale war battles put whole armies on the map. Between campaigns you restore an abandoned fortress into a thriving headquarters with farms, an armory, a lumberyard and trade routes, and as it grows it unlocks diversions such as cooking competitions, racing, a card game and fishing.

The visuals pair hand-drawn pixel-art characters with richly detailed 3D environments, and the soundtrack by Motoi Sakuraba and Michiko Naruke has a sweeping, old-school warmth. It has a few rough edges, but reviewers widely agreed it captures the spirit of classic Suikoden better than anything in decades, which makes it the game to pick up if you have spent years hoping for exactly that kind of grand, character-crowded war story.
