Item Description

It starts with a coffee spill. Charlie Takanite, an egg-shaped worker at the MomSteel Steel Factory, reaches for the donuts, knocks his coffee across his workstation and sends the factory machinery into a rebellion. Now the plant runs itself, the robots are hostile, a furious co-worker named Blast Furnace Bill wants Charlie cracked, and the only fix is to find the reset switch.

Eggs of Steel: Charlie's Eggcellent Adventure plays as a 3D platformer with a puzzle bent. Charlie jumps, ducks and rolls through industrial levels full of hazards and hostile machinery, swinging a wrench to bash enemies and open doors. Each stage asks him to collect a set number of time clocks before he can move on, and boss machines stand between him and the four keys needed to shut the factory down. The tone is goofy, with plenty of slapstick and egg puns baked right into the premise.

Its backstory is stranger than most. The game was developed by Rhythm & Hues Studios, a Hollywood visual effects and animation house better known for film work than for games, and published in North America by Atlus, while Enix released it in Japan as Hello Charlie!!. In the U.S. it also began life as a Blockbuster Video rental exclusive before retail copies followed.

Critics were not kind in 1998, and nobody will mistake Charlie for a Mario rival, but that is part of the fun now. Eggs of Steel is a true PlayStation oddity, a one-off experiment from a film-effects studio with a title that has become a favorite punchline, and a conversation piece for collectors who love the weird corners of the late-90s 3D platformer boom.
