Item Description

There is no dignified way to describe Earth Defense Force 2, and the game would be disappointed if you tried. Ants the size of buses pour over the hills, spiders swarm the streets, flying saucers blot out the sky and enormous walking war machines and city-crushing monsters stomp through the skyline, while you and a handful of soldiers try to hold the line with a frankly ridiculous arsenal. It is a B-movie alien invasion in game form, and it knows exactly what it is.

The series began with developer Sandlot in D3's budget Simple Series in Japan, and this second entry has an unusual history. It came out on the PlayStation 2 in Japan and in Europe as Global Defence Force but never reached North America, so this Vita release, an enhanced version of the PSP's Earth Defense Force 2 Portable, was the first time American players could get their hands on it. It brings the full campaign of more than seventy missions, most of them short, sharp blasts of destruction that suit a handheld perfectly.

Three classes change how every mission plays. The Infantry soldier carries rifles, shotguns and rocket launchers and simply stands his ground. The Pale Wing, a series favorite introduced in this game, flies on a jetpack and fires energy weapons but is fragile on foot. New to this version is the Air Raider from Earth Defense Force 2025, a support class who calls in air strikes and deploys turrets and mines. Weapons drop from the enemies you destroy, and the higher the difficulty, the better the gear, so there is always a reason to try the next level up.

It was built around four-player co-op and comes with a new English dub that leans fully into the series' cheesy, radio-chatter charm. The frame rate will buckle when the screen fills with bugs, a quirk the EDF faithful have long treated as part of the fun. On the Vita, the EDF formula is big, loud, silly and very hard to put down once the ants start coming over the ridge.

About the game

A remake of the PSP game "Earth Defense Force 2 Portable", that was a port of the Japanese PlayStation 2 game "Earth Defense Force 2" which was called "Global Defence Force" in Europe and didn't receive a release in North America on that platform. Earth Defense Force 2: Invaders From Planet Space features four-player online co-op, an entirely new Air Raider class, and a new English dub.
