When Wii Fit turned the living room into a gym, EA Sports answered with something more demanding. EA Sports Active, developed by EA Canada and released in 2009, was built to make you sweat, pairing the Wii Remote and Nunchuk with a resistance band and a leg strap that holds the Nunchuk against your thigh, so the game can track lower-body movement as well as your arms. Squats, lunges and leg raises are read in real time, and it is hard to fake your way through a session.

Variety keeps the workouts from turning into a chore. Alongside the strength and cardio exercises, sports-themed activities such as inline skating, boxing, tennis, baseball swings and basketball drills get your whole body moving, while an on-screen trainer gives clear instruction, feedback and encouragement as you go. The 30 Day Challenge builds a new workout for you every day and ramps up the intensity as you progress, and the custom mode lets you set the session length and body focus from more than twenty exercises, with a running count of the calories you burn.

EA Sports Active was one of the first games to make the Wii feel like a credible personal trainer rather than a novelty, and it was popular enough to spawn a sequel and the NFL Training Camp spinoff. It is a fascinating piece of the Wii's fitness boom, and still a practical, structured workout program on original hardware, provided you have the band and strap the routines are designed around.
