Few launch games leaned on the Vita's new hardware as eagerly as Dynasty Warriors Next. Released alongside the system in North America in February 2012, it took Omega Force's sprawling Three Kingdoms battles, hundreds of soldiers and a single overpowered general, and asked what they might feel like with a touchscreen, a rear touch pad and a gyroscope in your hands. The answer turned out to be a lot of fun.
The familiar core is all here. You pick an officer from Wei, Wu or Shu, carve through crowds with combos and screen-clearing Musou attacks and capture bases to tilt the battle your way. Before each fight you can play a stratagem card bought with gold earned in battle, boosting attack or defense or granting extra bases, and generals you defeat can join your side as playable characters. Next also simplifies the arsenal from Dynasty Warriors 7, giving each warrior a single signature weapon to master.
What sets it apart is how often it hands control to your fingers. Officer duels play out as touch sequences where you poke the screen to break a charge and swipe to counter. Some Musou attacks are launched with swipes, taps or a shake of the system, a Break gauge lets you seize an enemy base with a single tap once it fills, and swiping the mini-map opens a larger view for ordering allied officers around. Gyroscope mini-games have you turning the Vita to fire at charging war animals. If that sounds like too much, the motion controls can be switched off entirely.
Beyond the campaign, Conquest mode turns the map of ancient China into a turn-based territory war where your own custom officers can fight to claim regions, and a nearby friend can join in through local play. Push Square rated it 8 out of 10 for its refined combat and creative use of the Vita's controls. It is a snapshot of the platform's launch-day ambition, and the series' first attempt at making Musou play like something only a Vita could do.
