For most of Dynasty Warriors history, Lu Bu was the warrior you ran from. Spot him on the battlefield map and the sensible move was to steer your officer somewhere else. Xtreme Legends flips that around for Dynasty Warriors 8 and hands the most feared fighter of the Three Kingdoms his own story campaign, following his life and ambitions alongside his daughter Lu Lingqi, and this Complete Edition puts it together with the full Dynasty Warriors 8 campaign on a single Vita card.

Dynasty Warriors 8 is the entry where Omega Force's formula found its sharpest balance. Every weapon carries an affinity of Heaven, Earth or Man, and attacking with the stronger type staggers enemies and opens Storm Rush strings, while the Switch Counter lets you swap weapons mid-fight to punish an attack you would otherwise have to eat. Musou attacks still clear the screen with the same old thrill, but the system rewards you for paying attention to matchups rather than just mashing.

The story campaigns cover Wei, Wu, Shu and Jin, and the headline idea is the hypothetical routes. Hit the right conditions in key battles and history bends: officers who died in the novel survive, and kingdoms that lost get the chance to win. Xtreme Legends adds even more of those alternate scenarios, along with new playable officers, new weapon types and growth and speedrun elements, a revamped version of the town-building Ambition Mode and a brand new Challenge Mode built around score attacks. The officer roster across all four kingdoms and the Other faction runs well past seventy, each with a weapon and fighting style of their own.

On the Vita, all of that becomes a pocket-sized Three Kingdoms you can play a battle at a time. A Musou campaign is made for short bursts of crowd-clearing, and a hypothetical route or Challenge Mode run fits neatly into a lunch break. As a single cartridge holding the base game and its expansion, it is the most complete way to play Dynasty Warriors 8 away from the television.
