Few action games are set in a place as specific, or as lovingly rebuilt, as Taipei's Ximending. Dusk Diver 2, from Taiwanese studio WANIN Games, returns to the neon-lit shopping district and its eerie mirror dimension, Youshanding, where Yang Yumo, an ordinary student turned dimension-hopping fighter, protects the city from the chaos spilling through. The streets, storefronts and signage capture the real neighborhood with the kind of affection that comes from a team showing off its home turf.

The combat is a fast, real-time brawler with an anime flourish. Light and heavy attacks chain into flashy specials, a well-timed counter turns the tables on big hits, and a dodge keeps you moving through crowds of enemies in the streets and dungeons. You lead a four-member team, swapping between fighters on the fly while the AI handles the rest, and everyone levels up from a shared experience pool, so experimenting with different fighters never leaves anyone behind. Between battles, Tunaz Mart, a Ximending convenience store that doubles as the Guardians' secret headquarters, is home base for errands and odd jobs that send you across the district.

This sequel continues the story of the original 2019 Dusk Diver, with Yumo and her best friend Yusha now in college, and an in-game summary helps newcomers catch up. Reviews were middling, with critics enjoying the colorful visuals and fun combat while wishing for more variety, but the game has a charm all its own. For players who love anime-styled brawlers, it is a rare chance to fight your way through a real Taipei neighborhood instead of yet another Tokyo.
