Item Description

Dungeon Master changed computer role-playing games in 1987. FTL's first-person crawler ran in real time, with monsters that kept moving whether or not you were ready, and its claustrophobic stone corridors influenced a generation of games that followed. Theron's Quest is FTL's reworking of that classic for NEC's CD-ROM hardware, and instead of one vast labyrinth it offers seven smaller dungeons, each a self-contained adventure with its own story and its own monsters.

You play as Theron, a young hero sent to recover seven stolen holy treasures, each waiting at the heart of a different dungeon. Ak-Tu-Ba is a floating fortress overrun with mummies, the City of Formica is a warren of creepy underground tunnels, and the journey continues through the Village of Thieves, the Tower of Drator, the Tomb of Sarmon and the Den of Shadodan before the final descent into Demon's Gate. Theron fills out his party with three companions at the start of each dungeon, then has to find the treasure and fight his way back out so it can be returned to its shrine.

That structure changes how Dungeon Master feels. Equipment and loot are lost between dungeons and only Theron keeps his statistics and experience, so every expedition starts fresh, with a newly chosen party and nothing but your hero's growth to carry forward. It makes the game more focused and approachable than the sprawling original while keeping the series' signature tension: grid-based exploration in first person, real-time fights and the steady unease of turning a corner into something you can't yet see.

Victor Musical Industries published it in Japan in 1992, and Turbo Technologies brought it to North America, giving the TurboGrafx-CD one of its more unusual RPGs: a Western computer classic rebuilt for a Japanese console and then shipped back to American players in a new form. French magazine Consoles+ scored it 85 percent. It is a fascinating detour for collectors who follow Dungeon Master from the Atari ST and Amiga into the console world, and a compact way to experience what made the original so influential.
