Item Description

Five friends, one TV and a dungeon full of monsters: in 1989 that was an extraordinary thing to find on a home console. Dungeon Explorer took the swarming top-down action of Gauntlet, added towns, character classes and a sprawling map to explore, and let up to five players fight through it at once with a TurboTap and enough controllers to go around.

Each hero comes from one of eight classes, the fighter, thief, warlock, witch, bishop, elf, bard and gnome, and the differences go beyond raw stats. Every class carries its own white and black magic: the bishop's white potion heals allies standing nearby, while the bard's black potion changes the music. Two more classes, the princess and the hermit, can be unlocked through the game's password system as you progress. Defeat a dungeon boss and it leaves behind a crystal that cycles through four colors, each tied to a different stat, so timing your grab lets you shape how your character grows.

The quest sends the party across the land of Oddesia to recover the Ora Stone and bring down the alien king Natas (try reading that name backwards). Lives are shared by the whole group, which turns every multiplayer session into a lesson in teamwork and the occasional round of blame. Atlus developed the game with many of the same people who would go on to work on the Megami Tensei series, and composer Tsukasa Masuko's soundtrack gives the dungeons an energetic, adventurous pulse.

Critics at the time were won over, and Dragon magazine's three reviewers gave it a perfect score, describing it as a greatly expanded take on Gauntlet. Later reviewers have been cooler on its repetitive stretches and password saves, but its place as an early pioneer of cooperative action RPGs is secure, and it launched a series that continued with Dungeon Explorer II on the TurboGrafx-CD. Gather a few friends, hand out the classes, and it still makes for a lively co-op night on original hardware.
