Most strategy games hand you a map and an army. Dune hands you a desert planet, a palace full of advisors and the slow, eerie sense that you are turning into the messiah of Frank Herbert's novel. Cryo Interactive's adaptation first appeared in 1992 and was published by Virgin Games, and this Sega CD version brings its hypnotic blend of adventure and strategy to the console.
You play Paul Atreides, newly arrived on Arrakis with your father, Duke Leto, and your mother, Lady Jessica. From the palace at Arrakeen you fly out by ornithopter to find the hidden sietches of the Fremen, and every tribe you win over becomes part of the war effort. Some mine the spice the Emperor demands in regular shipments, some train as soldiers, and later some work to change the planet's ecology itself. Juggling those jobs while the Harkonnens push back is a delicate balance, and the clock never stops.
What makes it so absorbing is how the story grows alongside the strategy. Paul's latent psychic powers awaken as the campaign unfolds, characters from the book such as Chani and Liet-Kynes enter the story, and your Fremen troops progress from crysknives all the way to atomics. Eventually the sandworms themselves become part of how you move across the desert, a payoff that feels earned after hours of careful planning. The Sega CD release adds full-motion video sequences to the mix, and Stéphane Picq's synth-heavy score gives Arrakis a dreamy, otherworldly atmosphere.
1992 was a remarkable year for Dune games. Westwood's Dune II went on to help define real-time strategy, while Cryo's game took the slower, more literary path, and many players still consider it the most immersive Dune computer game ever made. If you have only ever known the planet through Dune II's harvesters or the films, this is the version that lets you live inside Herbert's story.
Dune is a 1992 video game, based upon Frank Herbert's science fiction novel of the same name. Developed by Cryo Interactive, is the first of the Dune computer games. Dune blended adventure with economic and military strategy, and is considered by many the most immersive Dune computer game. Loosely following the story of the novel, the game casts the player as Paul Atreides, with the ultimate goal of driving the Harkonnen from Planet Dune, while managing spice extraction, military, and later, ecology through the native Fremen tribes. As the player progresses, his troops are equipped with weapons from "crysknives" to atomics, tap into Paul's latent psychic powers, and get acquainted with such characters from the book as Chani and Liet-Kynes.
