Item Description

Five shields stand between you and defeat, and every card in your hand could become a creature, a spell or the mana that powers them. That's the elegant core of Duel Masters, the card game that grew out of a Japanese manga about Magic: The Gathering and reached American players through Wizards of the Coast, and Duel Masters: Kaijudo Showdown brings it to the Game Boy Advance.

Developed by Mistic Software and published by Atari in 2004 as the follow-up to Duel Masters: Sempai Legends, it hands you a pool of 300 cards drawn from the tabletop game's five civilizations: Fire, Water, Nature, Light and Darkness. Building a deck means balancing big creatures against cheap ones and deciding which cards you're willing to put into your mana zone, and the duels follow the tabletop rules closely, right down to shield triggers that can flip a losing game the moment an opponent breaks the wrong shield. The single-player story spins a mystery around a set of missing artifacts, and tournaments along the way feed fresh cards into your collection as the opponents get tougher.

With a link cable and a second copy, two players can battle head to head or trade cards, a nice echo of the playground trading culture the anime was built around. Kaijudo, the creature-summoning art at the heart of the show's lore, later lent its name to the franchise's 2012 American reboot, which gives this handheld edition a fun place in the series' timeline. For a former Duel Masters player, or a card-game fan curious about Magic's lesser-known cousin, it's a deep, portable way to start breaking shields again.
