Item Description

The Moon theme from Capcom's 1989 NES DuckTales is the kind of 8-bit melody that never leaves your head, and DuckTales Remastered treats that music, and everything else about the original, with obvious affection. Developed by WayForward and published by Capcom, this 2013 remake rebuilds Scrooge McDuck's globe-trotting treasure hunt from the ground up with hand-drawn, animated sprites set against lush, re-envisioned backgrounds that look like the afternoon cartoon come to life.

The heart of it is still the pogo cane. Scrooge bounces on enemies, spikes and hazards, and swings his cane to knock away rocks and chests, and the remake adds a tutorial level that gets you comfortable with both before the adventure opens up. The classic destinations return, including the Amazon, Transylvania, the African Mines, the Himalayas and the Moon, each expanded and reworked while keeping the exploration and hidden treasure that made the original such a favorite. A new final stage gives the story a bigger climax, and the money you collect pays for unlockable art and music in Scrooge's gallery, with a museum that tracks your stats.

The voice work is a treat for anyone who grew up with the 1987 series. Alan Young, Scrooge's voice since 1987, returned to the role, joined by original Disney character voice talent from the show, so the jokes and banter land with the right voices behind them. Jake Kaufman's soundtrack reimagines the NES melodies with fuller arrangements while keeping every hook intact, and the Moon theme is as triumphant as ever. Difficulty options range from forgiving to an Extreme mode that brings back the unforgiving feel of the cartridge.

Reviewers were divided on the new story scenes, which some felt slowed the pace, but the core platforming and the presentation won people over. Remakes like this mostly lived as downloads, so the PS3 disc release makes a satisfying shelf partner for an NES cartridge of the original. If you have ever wanted to hear Scrooge's own voice while you pogo across the lunar surface, this is the version that lets you.

About the game

DuckTales Remastered takes the classic Disney platforming adventure to a whole new level. All of the visuals from the 8-bit game have been beautifully re-created as hand-drawn and animated sprites, across a backdrop of luscious, re-envisioned level backgrounds. Furthermore, original Disney Character Voices talent, including some from the cartoon TV series, bring in-game characters to life with charm and wit, while the classic melodies of the original soundtrack are given a modern twist. The game also features an all new tutorial level where players can get familiar with the iconic pogo jump and cane swing, while Scrooge McDuck's Museum allows players to track all their stats and compare their progress with others via global leaderboards.
