Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
One shoulder button spins Jill's drill clockwise, the other spins it the opposite way. That simple split is the heart of Drill Dozer, and Game Freak builds an entire game out of it: walls to grind through, enemies to bore into, hidden paths to open up and bosses that have to be taken apart piece by piece. Directed by Ken Sugimori, better known as the artist behind Pokémon's character designs, it is one of the most inventive platformers the Game Boy Advance ever saw, and a late surprise in the system's life.
Jill is the daughter of the leader of the Red Dozers, a bandit gang, and when the rival Skullkers ambush her father and steal a Red Diamond that belonged to her mother, she climbs into the family's drilling mech and goes after them. The story is light and breezy, but the mechanics are anything but. Inside each level are sprockets that let the Drill Dozer shift up a gear, unlocking faster, more powerful drilling to punch through tougher blocks and enemies. Those gears reset at the end of each stage, so every level becomes a fresh climb from first gear to full power, with a boss waiting at the end. Later stages add upgrades that take Jill into the air and underwater, and clearing the game unlocks a harder difficulty.
Drill Dozer also shipped on a custom cartridge with a rumble motor built right in, a feature Nintendo suggested, so the drill was designed to buzz in your hands as it bites through steel. On the Game Boy Player, the rumble carries through to the GameCube controller. Go Ichinose, a Pokémon composer, wrote the music, and Nintendo Power named it the Game Boy Advance game of the year for 2006.
It arrived in North America in early 2006, when most players had already moved on to the Nintendo DS, and it never got a cartridge release in Europe. That late timing turned it into a cult favorite rather than a hit, but the people who found it rarely forget it, and Jill later earned a cameo in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Clever level design, a mechanic no other platformer quite copied and Game Freak's charm outside of Pokémon make it a standout on the system.
In the platformer Drill Dozer, you can take the roll of Jill, the daughter of a crime boss who is set on revenge. When a rival gang steals away her family's heirloom, Jill gives chase in her Drill Dozer, an upgradeable piece of power armor equipped with a large drill. This piece of equipment will help you navigate through six different areas, where you will encounter varied enemies and bosses.
