Item Description
Most action RPGs give you a hero. Drakengard 3 gives you Zero, a crude, sardonic Intoner with a flower blooming from one eye, who opens the story by setting out to kill her five younger sisters. The Intoners have brought peace to the world through their power to wield magic with song, and Zero's crusade against One, Two, Three, Four and Five is as violent as it is mysterious. Why she wants them dead is the question the whole game is built around, and the answer is as strange and bleak as fans of this series would hope.
The action splits between brutal hack-and-slash on the ground, where Zero cuts through waves of soldiers with swords, spears, combat bracers and chakrams, and soaring battles on the back of Mikhail, a childlike dragon whose innocent chatter sits in hilarious contrast to his partner's foul mouth. Zero's band of disciples, Dito, Decadus, Cent and Octa, are an odd and frequently uncomfortable crew, and the script mines their banter for pitch-black comedy. Every so often the game drags you into a different emotional register entirely, and that whiplash is very much the point.
Drakengard 3 was directed by Yoko Taro, the mind behind the original Drakengard and the NieR games, and developed by Access Games for Square Enix. It is a prequel to the first Drakengard, and its story unfolds across multiple branches, each one recontextualizing what came before. The final branch is one of the most talked-about challenges of its era, an unforgiving rhythm-game finale set to a song that players remember for years. Keiichi Okabe's soundtrack, from the composer who went on to score NieR: Automata, carries the whole thing, swinging between haunting vocal themes and furious battle music.
Reviews were mixed, with critics divided on its combat and technical roughness, but its storytelling and characters earned it a devoted cult following that has only grown as NieR: Automata brought new players into Yoko Taro's work. On PlayStation 3, it is the place to see how Zero, Mikhail and the Intoners fit into the timeline that connects Drakengard and NieR, and it is unlike anything else in the PS3 library.

About the game
Drakengard 3 transports players to a medieval world where six goddess-like sisters known as "Intoners" have brought peace to the earth with their power to manipulate magic through song. Harmony is disrupted, however, when the eldest sister, Zero, attempts to murder her younger sisters with the help of her dragon companion, Mikhail. As the story progresses, players find themselves in a battle to unravel the mystery of Zero and learn her true intentions. A prequel to the original Drakengard, Drakengard 3 features the series’ signature brand of action, pitting players against hordes of fiends and foes in remorseless hack-and-slash ground combat, and then sending them soaring for pitched aerial battles on the back of the dragon Mikhail.
