Item Description
Drakengard does not want you to feel comfortable. Its hero, Caim, is a prince who has lost his kingdom and his family to the Empire, and when he is mortally wounded in battle he makes a pact with a captive red dragon so that both of them can live. The price is his voice. From that moment he speaks only through the dragon, Angelus, a proud creature who openly despises humans, and the two of them carve a path of vengeance across a war-torn fantasy world that grows stranger and darker with every chapter.
Developed by Cavia and directed by Yoko Taro in his debut, the game splits its battles between the ground and the sky. On foot, Caim hacks through enormous enemy armies in the style of a Dynasty Warriors brawler. On dragonback, Angelus is fast and agile, wheeling around in an instant and raining fire on airborne foes and ground troops alike, from powerful single blasts to multiple lock-on shots. Caim can collect dozens of weapons, and leveling each one unlocks a short, often unsettling backstory, so even the armory carries the game's grim sense of humor.
His companions are just as damaged. The pact partners Leonard, Arioch and Seere have each paid their own terrible price, and Caim's sister Furiae bears the burden of the Goddess, the living seal that holds the world together. The score, assembled from looping fragments of classical music into something dissonant and relentless, keeps every battlefield feeling off-kilter. Branching paths and multiple endings unlock over repeat playthroughs, each bleaker or more surreal than the last, and the final one takes the story somewhere no fantasy RPG of 2003 would have dared.
That last ending matters, because it leads into the world of NieR, making Drakengard the starting point of the universe that later produced NieR: Automata. Fans of Yoko Taro's later work keep coming back here to see where his fascination with grief, violence and impossible choices first took shape. Rough around the edges and proud of it, this is a cult PlayStation 2 game whose story people are still unpacking two decades later.

About the game
Drakengard follows the story of a kingdomless prince named Caim who fights for the Union against the Empire. Under the Union's protection are the Hierarchs and the Goddess, currently Caim's sister Furiae, who is a human manifestation of one of the four seals that protect the world from being broken. As the game begins, Caim is fatally wounded in a battle with the Empire. Encountering a captured Red Dragon who is also near death, Caim makes a fateful choice. In exchange for both their lives, the Red Dragon and Caim will enter a pact. This pact will forever chain their lives to one another and link their souls, at the cost of something irreplaceable. Recharged with the fires of a Dragon, Caim's vengeance burns over the enemy... The player controls Caim on his quest. The game is separated into three distinct modes: Aerial combat, Ground combat and Event Combat. In Aerial Combat, Caim rides dragonback against a variety of airborne foes breathing fireballs (strong single shots and weaker multiple lock-on shots). The Dragon is agile and is able to evade incoming threats, turning around completely in a moment.
