Item Description

Your family has just moved to the island kingdom of Greatlog to open a monster ranch, and almost immediately the island starts to sink. That is the cheerfully odd setup of Dragon Warrior Monsters 2, and in Cobi's Journey you play as Cobi, the young breeder who has to travel through gateways into other worlds to find the magic keys and the missing plug that will keep Greatlog afloat, with the troublemaking Prince Kameha and his assistant Warubou at the center of the mess.

The heart of the game is the monster roster: more than 300 creatures across eleven families, from classic Dragon Quest favorites like the Slime to monsters borrowed from Dragon Quest VII. You lead three into battle at a time while the rest wait back at your father's ranch, and recruiting new ones means winning them over in turn-based fights. The real depth is breeding. Bring a male and female pair that have reached level 10 to the Starry Shrine, and they leave behind an offspring that inherits from both parents, often an entirely new species. Chasing a particular monster through generations of careful pairings is endlessly absorbing.

Cobi's Journey and its counterpart, Tara's Adventure, each have their own monsters and their own magic keys, so linking up with a friend who owns the other version is the way to open every world and complete the collection. The link cable also lets two players trade, battle head-to-head or team up against the computer. After the story ends, more keys and worlds keep the adventure going, alongside randomized dungeons for grinding and exploring.

It was a phenomenon in Japan, topping the sales charts in its launch week and selling roughly 1.59 million copies there, and IGN gave it a 9 out of 10, arguing it was far more than a Pokemon clone. Cobi's Journey is the version that pairs Cobi's story with its own monster lineup, and the natural place to start a Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 set.

About the game

Dragon Quest Monsters 2 followed Pokemon's strategy of releasing 2 games with exclusive monsters that would need to be traded between versions to collect them all. The games were later re-released along with the first Dragon Quest Monsters as a compilation for the PlayStation and the games were later remade for the 3DS, but only in Japan.
