Item Description

Long before monster collecting became one of gaming's most crowded genres, Dragon Warrior Monsters took the slimes, drackies and golems of Dragon Quest and made them yours to recruit, raise, breed and battle. Developed by Tose and first released in Japan for the Game Boy just ahead of the Game Boy Color's launch, it arrived in North America through Eidos as one of the deepest RPGs on Nintendo's color handheld.

You play as young Terry, whose sister Milly is spirited away into the kingdom of GreatTree by the mischievous Warubou. To get her back, Terry becomes a monster master, venturing through the castle's magical gates, each one opening onto a series of randomly generated floors full of wild monsters. Defeated monsters may ask to join your team, and offering them meat improves your odds, so building a party of three fighters becomes a constant hunt for the right recruits. The goal is the kingdom's Starry Night Tournament, where the champion is granted a wish.

Breeding is where the game takes hold of you. Pair two monsters and their offspring can turn out to be an entirely new species that carries over skills from its parents, which means every pairing is an experiment and every egg is a little gamble. Chasing a rare creature through careful breeding chains, while tending extra monsters back at the farm, can swallow dozens of hours, and the link cable opens up trading and battling with friends. Akira Toriyama's designs give the whole bestiary its unmistakable Dragon Quest personality.

This is the game that launched the Dragon Quest Monsters series, which carried on through Dragon Warrior Monsters 2, the Joker games and, much later, The Dark Prince. It also has a lovely link to the main series: Terry and Milly are the younger selves of characters from Dragon Quest VI, a game English-speaking players would not get officially until years later. Next to Pokémon on a Game Boy Color shelf, it is the deeper, stranger monster-raiser, built for players who love the patient gamble of a breeding chain.
