Item Description

The first monster battle in Dragon Warrior VII arrives only after a long stretch of exploring, talking and puzzling, and that patience tells you everything about the game ahead. This is Dragon Quest at its most epic in scale, a sprawling adventure built by Heartbeat and published by Enix, which became the best-selling PlayStation game in Japan and finally brought a new mainline entry to North America after a wait of nearly a decade.

It begins on Estard, a peaceful island that its people believe to be the only land in the world. The hero, a fisherman's son, and his friends Prince Kiefer and the strong-willed Maribel discover a mysterious shrine where stone tablet fragments open doorways into the past. Each restored fragment leads to a lost island in a bygone era; solve that island's crisis, and it reappears on the map in the present day. Many of these stories are surprisingly bittersweet, with villages haunted by curses, betrayals and tragedies, and returning to see how the present has changed is one of the game's quiet joys.

Once the class system opens up at the Dharma Temple, the strategy deepens dramatically. Characters can master vocations and combine them into advanced classes, and monster hearts let your party take on monster classes of their own. Recruits such as the wolf boy Gabo, the old warrior Melvin and the swordswoman Aira round out a cast that changes over the course of the journey, all brought to life by Akira Toriyama's designs and Koichi Sugiyama's orchestral score, with series creator Yuji Horii guiding the scenario.

This two-disc adventure was also the last game released in North America under the Dragon Warrior name before the series adopted Dragon Quest, which gives it a distinctive place on any Dragon Quest shelf. The 3DS remake modernized the presentation, but the PlayStation original keeps the specific charm of its era: 2D sprites on 3D landscapes, the first English script and the sense of an enormous, slowly unfolding world best savored over a long winter of play.

It was the first main series Dragon Quest title to be released outside of Japan since the release of Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen in North America in 1992, and the last DQ title to be released in North America with the Dragon Warrior name.
