Long before Trails in the Sky and Trails of Cold Steel turned The Legend of Heroes into one of the most ambitious story-driven RPG series in Japan, it began here. Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes was Nihon Falcom's 1989 computer RPG, the sixth game to carry the Dragon Slayer name and the first of the Legend of Heroes line, and Hudson Soft's CD-ROM version brought it to North America on the TurboGrafx-CD in 1992.

The story opens like a royal tragedy. Prince Logan has been raised in the quiet town of Exile while the regent Drax governs in his place, until Drax reveals himself as the man who murdered Logan's father, announces that the prince is dead and throws him in a dungeon to await execution. Rescued by Ethan and drawn into an underground resistance, Logan sets out across an enormous world to take back his kingdom, gathering companions such as Giles and Sonia along the way.

Under the hood it is a classic turn-based RPG with a few ideas ahead of their time. Spells are bought rather than learned, and any party member can equip any spell, so you shape your casters to suit your own strategy. Encounters come thick and fast, which is exactly why the auto-battle option is such a welcome touch, letting the party handle routine fights while you focus on the journey. Hudson dressed up the port with a colorful illustrated introduction and full CD audio for the soundtrack by Mieko Ishikawa and Masaaki Kawai, a score that sounds great on its own.

For English-speaking fans, its significance is hard to overstate. This was the only Legend of Heroes game released in the United States until the PSP's A Tear of Vermillion more than a decade later, and Electronic Games magazine nominated it for its 1992 Multimedia Game of the Year, praising a mammoth quest that was meticulously detailed. For anyone following Falcom's storytelling from Ys to the modern Trails saga, this is the first chapter, and the TurboGrafx-CD is where it first spoke English.
