Item Description
The world of Dragon Quest VII begins as a single island in an endless ocean, and the people of Estard believe it is all there has ever been. It takes a fisherman's son, his friend Prince Kiefer and the stubborn Maribel, poking around a forbidden ruin, to discover otherwise. Inside the Shrine of Mysteries they find pedestals waiting for stone tablet fragments, and each completed tablet sends them into the distant past of a land that has vanished from the map.
That structure is what makes Dragon Quest VII so memorable. Every island is its own self-contained story, a town frozen in a moment of crisis, a curse, a war or a quiet tragedy, and only by setting things right in the past does that land rise again in the present, where you can return to see how your choices played out across the centuries. Some of these vignettes are warm and funny and some are surprisingly bleak, and together they add up to one of the largest adventures in the series, with new companions such as the wolf-raised Gabo joining as the world expands.
This 3DS version, developed by ArtePiazza, rebuilds the PlayStation original from the ground up. The world is fully 3D with new character models, the script was retranslated, and the remake tightens the famously slow opening so the adventure gets moving sooner. The deep vocation system lets you shape the party across more than 30 classes, including monster vocations, and turn-based battles keep the classic Dragon Quest rhythm, all set to Koichi Sugiyama's music and Akira Toriyama's designs.
In North America the game had last appeared in 2001 as Dragon Warrior VII on the PlayStation, so this remake gave a new generation its first real chance to play it. It is the most approachable way to experience the series' most ambitious bout of storybook storytelling, and a big, rewarding RPG to sink a long stretch of evenings into.
