The adventure opens on a battle against the demon lord Murdaw that goes badly wrong, and then the hero wakes up in a quiet mountain village as if none of it ever happened. That jolt sets the tone for Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation, an RPG built around two overlapping worlds, one real and one dreamed, where towns, people and even the heroes themselves exist in different versions. Working out how the two realms connect, and who the party members really are, is the mystery that pulls you through the whole journey.
Moment to moment, this is classic Dragon Quest: turn-based battles, random encounters, towns that each hide a problem worth solving, and a cast drawn by Akira Toriyama and scored by Koichi Sugiyama. Carver, Milly, Ashlynn, Nevan, Amos and Terry fill out the party, and Terry will be a familiar face to anyone who played Dragon Quest Monsters. Getting around is half the fun, with a flying bed and a magic carpet among the stranger rides the series has ever handed a party, and the DS version adds Party Chat so your companions can weigh in on where you are and what just happened.
The game really opens up several hours in at Alltrades Abbey, where the vocation system unlocks. Characters train in classes, and the skills they learn stay with them after they switch, so mastering the right combinations leads to advanced vocations such as Paladin and Sage. It is one of the most flexible job systems in the series, and planning a party around it becomes a long-term project. ArtePiazza's remake also made changes fans still debate: the original's battlefield monster recruitment is gone, replaced by a group of slime companions you meet in towns and dungeons, and a new stylus minigame, Slippin' Slime, joins the diversions.
Dragon Quest VI first appeared on the Super Famicom in 1995 and never left Japan in that form. This DS release, published by Nintendo in North America in 2011, was the first official English version, and it completed the DS trilogy of Zenithian remakes alongside IV and V. It is a deliberate, old-school RPG that expects some grinding, and players who enjoy that rhythm find a story with more twists than its cheerful art lets on. Dragon Quest V gave the trilogy its family saga; VI is the strange, dreamlike puzzle box that rounds it out.
Dragon Quest VI did not receive an enhanced remake on a console until the Nintendo DS. The Dragon Quest VI enhanced remake for the Nintendo DS was announced in late 2007 by Square Enix and was developed by ArtePiazza. A handful of changes were made to the game, some remaining controversial among fans.
