Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride is one of the best-loved entries in the Dragon Quest series, and this Nintendo DS release, published by Square Enix in 2009, was the first time the game was officially released in English. That gives this version a genuinely significant place in the series' history. Originally a 1992 Super Famicom game in Japan, it follows a hero across three stages of his life: childhood, adulthood and fatherhood. It is a multigenerational epic that deals with love, loss, slavery and the search for one's own destiny with an honesty few RPGs of any era have attempted, and its emotional weight is what players remember long after the credits roll.
The gameplay is classic Dragon Quest at its most refined: turn-based battles, charming monster designs and a world that rewards exploration at every turn. What sets Dragon Quest V apart is monster recruitment, which lets defeated enemies join your party as permanent companions. It adds dozens of hours of depth and personalizes every playthrough, since your roster can look completely different from anyone else's depending on who you have coaxed to your side.
The choice of bride is the story's landmark moment and shapes everything that follows, and the DS version adds a third candidate, Debora, alongside Bianca and Nera. Dragon Quest V uses basic role-playing video game mechanics seen in the rest of the series, which includes leveling up by gaining experience points through battle, first person turn-based battles, and equipping weapons and armor. Something new to the Dragon Quest series is the ability to tame monsters into the player's party. The monsters can be used in battle and level-up like the human characters. Monsters sometimes request to join the Hero after battles if the party is strong enough. There are a total of 71 monsters that are capable of joining the Hero's party
