High above the clouds, a Celestrian guardian watches over the village of Angel Falls, gathering the gratitude of the people below. Then something tears through the heavens, the Observatory is shaken, the sacred fyggs of the World Tree scatter across the land, and you tumble to earth without your wings or halo. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies begins with that fall and turns it into one of the biggest adventures on the Nintendo DS, and the first numbered Dragon Quest made for a handheld.
Level-5, the studio behind Dragon Quest VIII, developed it with Square Enix, and the big change is personal. You design your own hero, then visit Patty's Party Planning Place in Stornway to create the companions who travel with you, choosing their looks and vocations from Warrior, Priest, Mage, Martial Artist, Thief and Minstrel, with advanced callings like Gladiator, Paladin, Ranger, Armamentalist, Sage and Luminary waiting later. Every piece of gear you equip shows up on your characters, so a party ends up looking as distinctive as it plays. Monsters roam visibly in the field instead of ambushing you through random encounters, and Stella, a pushy little fairy with big plans of her own, keeps you company along the way.
The quests and the post-game are what kept players hooked for hundreds of hours. Well over a hundred side quests, the alchemy pot for crafting rare equipment, and treasure maps that open randomly generated grottoes full of fearsome bosses give the game an almost endless tail. Up to four players could adventure together in local co-op, each bringing their own hero into one world, and tag mode let your character drop in at other players' Quester's Rest inns and swap treasure maps whenever DS systems passed each other. In Japan that feature became a phenomenon, with crowds of players gathering in Tokyo's Akihabara district to trade maps.
Akira Toriyama's designs and Koichi Sugiyama's music anchor it firmly in Dragon Quest tradition, yet the experience belongs to you: your party, your gear, your grotto runs. Its downloadable quests from the Nintendo Wi-Fi era are long gone, but the game on the cartridge holds more adventure than most players ever finish, which is why Dragon Quest IX is still the DS role-playing game people point to when they talk about losing a whole year to a handheld.
