Item Description

When Dragon Quest III launched on the Famicom in Japan in 1988, it was a phenomenon on a scale few games have matched, and its ideas shaped the Japanese RPG for decades afterward. NES players later met it as Dragon Warrior III. The HD-2D Remake, developed by Artdink and published by Square Enix in 2024, rebuilds that adventure with the same layered look of pixel-art characters in richly lit, diorama-like environments that made Octopath Traveler so striking, and the effect on Dragon Quest's bright, hand-drawn world is gorgeous.

The story is simple and stirring. On the hero's sixteenth birthday, the King of Aliahan sends them out to finish what their father, the legendary Ortega, could not: defeat the archfiend Baramos. You build your own party at Patty's tavern, choosing companions by vocation, and Dragon Quest III was the game that made that idea famous. Warriors, mages, priests, martial artists, merchants and more each play differently, and later you can change vocations at Alltrades Abbey, carrying spells and stats from one career into the next to create hybrids that are entirely your own.

The remake adds plenty for returning players. A new vocation, the Monster Wrangler, specializes in tricks learned from monsters and helps you rescue creatures scattered across the world, who can then fight for you in Monster Arena tournaments. New story episodes follow Ortega's own journey, and three difficulty settings, from the forgiving Dracky Quest to the punishing Draconian Quest, let you tune the challenge. Akira Toriyama's character and monster designs and Koichi Sugiyama's music, here in orchestral form, keep the spirit of the original intact, along with quality-of-life touches like adjustable battle speed.

Dragon Quest III is also the first chapter of the Erdrick trilogy in story order, and the moment it reveals its connection to the original Dragon Quest is a famous one best left unspoiled. This remake is the most beautiful way yet to experience the game that defined the Dragon Quest formula, now on Xbox Series X alongside the other major platforms.

About the game

The Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is a modernized turn-based JRPG that follows a hero’s quest to defeat the archfiend Baramos. It features updated HD-2D visuals and an orchestral score while maintaining the original's prequel narrative and non-linear world exploration. The core mechanics center on a vocation system for party customization, now including the new Monster Wrangler class. Modern updates like adjustable battle speeds and difficulty settings streamline the traditional experience of leveling characters and managing strategic combat.
