On the morning of the hero's sixteenth birthday, the king of Aliahan sends a young adventurer out to finish what their father Ortega could not: defeat the archfiend Baramos. So begins Dragon Quest III, the 1988 Famicom classic that many players consider the high point of the original trilogy, and this HD-2D Remake from Square Enix and developer Artdink rebuilds it in the same diorama-like style that made Octopath Traveler so striking, with pixel-art characters set against detailed 3D towns, dungeons and oceans glowing with modern lighting.
The party is yours to build. In Aliahan you recruit companions and choose their vocations, from warriors and mages to priests, martial artists, merchants and thieves, and later in the adventure characters can change classes, carrying their learned spells into new roles and eventually reaching the coveted Sage. The remake adds a brand-new vocation, the Monster Wrangler, which brings a fresh tactical option to a class system that has shaped the series ever since. Adjustable battle speeds and difficulty settings make the classic turn-based grind as brisk or as demanding as you want it.
What made Dragon Quest III legendary was its freedom. Once you have a ship, the world opens wide, and the quest to gather six orbs and revive Ramia the Everbird sends you across continents modeled loosely on real-world cultures, with a day and night cycle that changes towns, characters and secrets. Akira Toriyama's monster designs look wonderful in HD-2D, and Koichi Sugiyama's music returns in full orchestral arrangements that give old melodies new grandeur.
North American players first met this adventure as Dragon Warrior III on the NES, and its story connects to the legend of Erdrick in ways that recast the first two games, a revelation that still lands beautifully today. The HD-2D Remake is the best-looking version this adventure has ever had and the natural starting point for the Erdrick saga, presented with the kind of care that makes a nearly forty-year-old quest feel like a new discovery on PlayStation 5.
