For a thousand years, the Seven Realms kept the peace. Dragon Quest Heroes II opens on the day that peace shatters, as old allies turn on each other and young heroes Lazarel and Teresa find themselves caught in the middle. Omega Force's sequel took everything people enjoyed about the first Dragon Quest Heroes, the crowd-clearing action and the cheerful parade of familiar monsters, and folded it into something that feels much more like a true Dragon Quest adventure.
The biggest change is the world itself. Instead of hopping between isolated stages, you travel connected fields with treasure chests, random encounters and shifting weather, warping between visited places with Zoomstones and returning to the capital of Accordia as your hub. Lazarel and Teresa can change vocations, swapping between classes like warrior, mage, martial artist and thief, each with its own equipment and skill set, so you can reshape how your hero plays as the journey goes on.
Combat still has that satisfying musou rhythm of carving through dozens of slimes, golems and dracky at once, but the party is the real draw. Prince Cesar of Dunisia and the royal guard Desdemona join the fight alongside familiar heroes from earlier Dragon Quest adventures who turn up claiming to come from other worlds, and swapping between them mid-battle to chain spells and special moves keeps the action lively. Akira Toriyama's monster designs and Koichi Sugiyama's music give every battlefield the unmistakable look and sound of the series.
Critics broadly agreed it was a step up from the original, with GameSpot awarding it an 8 out of 10 and Famitsu a near-perfect 39 out of 40, praising the improved story, controls and combat changes. The game also added four-player co-op missions built around online play, including the multiplayer-only Time-Space Labyrinth. On PS4, it is the more ambitious of the two Heroes games and the better place to start if you want an action game that still feels like a Dragon Quest journey.
"DRAGON QUEST HEROES II is a hack-and-slash, field-roaming Action RPG that sends players on a new adventure to restore order in a once peaceful world filled with hordes of monsters and battles of epic proportions. Up to 4 players can band together in cooperative multiplayer to conquer swarms of enemies and defeat challenging boss monsters. There is also a cast of many playable characters each with unique moves and abilities – including a host of familiar faces from the DRAGON QUEST series and four brand new heroes that must team up to defeat an unknown threat looming over the Seven Realms!"
