Item Description

In the Kingdom of Arba, humans and monsters have long lived side by side, with slimes and other familiar creatures wandering the streets as friends and neighbors. Then a mysterious force turns every monster in the land hostile at once, and royal guards Luceus and Aurora are left defending their city against the very creatures that used to be their neighbors. That cheerful, slightly heartbreaking premise sets the tone for Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below.

Built by Omega Force, the team behind Dynasty Warriors, this is Dragon Quest reimagined as large-scale action. Instead of trading turns, you carve through waves of slimes, dracky, golems and bigger, nastier foes in real time, firing off spells and special abilities that series fans will recognize by name. Many stages ask you to defend a key point against an onslaught, and defeated monsters can leave behind medals that let you call them in as allies, turning the enemy's own forces into a defensive line of your own design.

The party is a love letter to the series. Alongside King Doric of Arba, Luceus and Aurora team up with fan favorites pulled from across Dragon Quest history, including Alena, Bianca and Yangus, and switching between them mid-battle to chain attacks is a big part of the fun. Akira Toriyama's character and monster designs translate beautifully into full 3D, and Koichi Sugiyama's music gives every battle the grand, familiar Dragon Quest sound.

The game sold more than a million copies in Japan and earned solid reviews in the West, including an 8 out of 10 from GameSpot, and its success led straight to Dragon Quest Heroes II. On PS4 it is where the Heroes line began, a bright, colorful action game that finally shows what a Dragon Quest battle looks like when the slimes number in the hundreds.
