What if the hero of the very first Dragon Quest had said yes? When the Dragonlord offered to share half the world, every player knew the right answer was no. Dragon Quest Builders imagines the hero accepting, and the result is a ruined Alefgard plunged into darkness, where people have forgotten how to build anything at all. Guided by the voice of the goddess Rubiss, you play the Builder, the one person who can still create, and your job is to bring civilization back one block at a time.
The building is the hook, but the RPG structure is what makes it click. You smash terrain and monsters for materials, craft tools and weapons at a workbench, and learn new recipes as the story moves forward. Enclose a space with walls, a door and a light source and it becomes a room; fill it with the right furniture and it becomes a bedroom, a kitchen or a workshop, raising your town's level and drawing in new residents who ask for help, offer advice and occasionally pitch in. Then the monsters come, and the walls you built have to hold.
The adventure unfolds across chapters set in Cantlin, Rimuldar, Kol and Galenholm, and finally Tantegel, each starting you from scratch with new materials, challenges and townsfolk. Clearing the first chapter also unlocks Terra Incognita, a free-building mode for anyone who would rather design a castle than chase a story. Slimes, drackies and other monsters straight out of the first Dragon Quest roam the blocky countryside, and recognizable Dragon Quest themes accompany the work.
Builders launched an entire spinoff line, and this first entry is the one tied directly to the original Dragon Quest, retelling Alefgard's story from a delightfully strange angle. On PS4 it is a charming, satisfying blend of Minecraft-style creativity and classic RPG warmth, with enough jokes about the Dragonlord's bargain to reward longtime fans and enough structure to give every build a reason to exist.

Everything plays out in real time and the world is made entirely of blocks (although it may not look that blocky) and you can use these blocks to build pretty much whatever you want. Building is easy and can be done in three steps: 1. Plan what you’re going to build! 2. Gather your resources! 3. Begin construction and create your masterpiece! There is an overarching main storyline to follow in Dragon Quest Builders so if you want a narrative to get attached to and pull you through, that’s in there too. It wouldn’t be a Dragon Quest game without one after all! Oh and there’s plenty of quirky side quests and NPCs to give you that full RPG experience, just with the additional sandbox gameplay and monsters to battle as well."
