Item Condition

Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

You ride your bicycle down an unfamiliar alley, wander into an antique shop and touch a glowing crystal. The next thing you know, you are standing in a monster-filled forest maze with a large egg following you around. Dragon Crystal is a roguelike from Sega's early Game Gear days, and that odd little opening is the start of a dungeon crawl with far more depth than its pocket size suggests.

Every floor is a fog-covered maze with randomly placed monsters and items, and you uncover the map as you explore. Combat is turn-based in the classic roguelike sense: each step or action is a turn, enemies move when you move, and getting surrounded is how runs end. Hunger keeps the pressure on, so you need to keep finding cakes and meat to avoid starving. Potions, books, rods and rings are color-coded and unidentified until you try them, which means every new item is a gamble that might save your life or ruin it.

Then there is the egg. As you gain levels it hatches into a baby dragon, and your companion keeps growing as you push deeper, a reason to care about every level-up beyond the numbers. Your goal is the holy goblet waiting on the thirtieth floor, and the early stretches have their own surreal charm, with trees, cacti, sunflowers and Easter Island-style statues scattered across the mazes. If you have enough gold you can continue after falling, but you lose everything you were carrying unequipped, so greed is always a risk.

Dragon Crystal shares its DNA with Sega's Genesis roguelike Fatal Labyrinth, released around the same time, and it brought that genre's run-based tension to a handheld years before roguelikes became fashionable. Dragon magazine gave it five stars, and Sega brought it back on the 3DS Virtual Console decades later. It is an ideal handheld game: short turns, quick decisions and runs that never play out the same way twice.
