Item Description
A portal to the underworld tears open over Earth, the dead start walking among the living, and Goku has to fight his way through to set things right. Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai builds its story mode on that premise, borrowing from the Fusion Reborn movie, and it was the first time the Budokai style of Dragon Ball Z fighting landed on the PlayStation Portable. Developed by Dimps, the team behind the console Budokai games, it squeezes the series' high-speed brawling onto a handheld without losing the spectacle.
Fights feel lifted straight from the anime. Eighteen playable characters cover favorites from across the series, and battles are full of flight, energy blasts, transformations, teleporting counterattacks and character-specific signature moves. Each fighter carries up to seven health bars and seven ki bars, so long, back-and-forth matches build the kind of tension the show was famous for, and well-timed ki spending lets you vanish behind an opponent's attack and strike back.
The Dragon Road story mode runs across five chapters, with choices along the way that change how the movie-inspired story unfolds. Arcade mode sends you through a ladder of ten fights to collect all seven Dragon Balls, while Time Attack, Survival and Z Trial challenges test speed and endurance. A customizable Profile Card tracks your wins, power level and records, decorated with stamps bought from the in-game shop, and two players could battle wirelessly over the PSP's local connection to grow their power levels head to head.
Shin Budokai packs the energy of the Budokai era into a compact, easy-to-pick-up fighter you can take anywhere, and it marked the beginning of a run of PSP Dragon Ball games that continued with its sequel, Shin Budokai: Another Road.
