Item Description

Long before Dragon Ball Z had a deep bench of handheld games, The Legacy of Goku handed Game Boy Advance owners a full overhead world to explore as Goku. Webfoot Technologies' 2002 action RPG, published by Infogrames, opens quietly at Kame House and builds toward one of anime's most famous moments: the battle on Namek where Frieza pushes Goku past his limits and into Super Saiyan.

Goku carries the whole adventure. Melee strikes and ki blasts sit on separate buttons, the L button cycles through the energy techniques he learns as the story unfolds, and a recharging energy meter keeps you from spamming the big moves. Defeating enemies earns experience and levels, and between story battles the world is full of the small favors that fill the show's quieter moments: tracking down Master Roshi's magazines, recovering a pterodactyl's stolen egg, stopping a bank robbery, planting Namekian saplings. The boss list reads like a highlight reel of the Saiyan and Frieza sagas, from Raditz and Nappa to Vegeta's Great Ape transformation, the Ginyu Force and Frieza in all four of his forms, with detours through Other World, Earth's cities and snowfields and the green skies of Namek along the way.

Critics of the day were tough on it, pointing to small-fry enemies that hit far too hard and side quests that felt like chores, yet fans bought it in enormous numbers, more than a million copies in the US alone. That success paved the way for The Legacy of Goku II and Buu's Fury, which grew the formula with more playable fighters and bigger worlds. Playing the original today is a look at where Dragon Ball's handheld RPG lineage began, and a nostalgic run through the Saiyan Saga the way a lot of kids first experienced it, fresh from an afternoon of Toonami.
