Most Dragon Ball games are built around the fights. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is built around everything in between. Between showdowns with Raditz, Frieza, Cell and Majin Buu, you fly freely across open zones of the Dragon Ball world, collect Z Orbs from the sky, fish, hunt for ingredients and sit down to big home-cooked meals that boost your stats. It is the most relaxed and lived-in version of the Z story a game has offered, and a remarkably faithful one.

CyberConnect2, the team behind the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm games, retells the anime arc by arc, from the Saiyan arrival through Namek, the Androids and the Cell Games to the Buu saga. Story beats are recreated in lavish cutscenes, and the playable character shifts as the plot demands, so you spend stretches as Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo and others as well as Goku. Fights play out as real-time 3D brawls on the ground and in the air, with ki blasts, rush combos and support allies you can call on for their own techniques. Boss battles are built as big set-piece encounters, with enemies firing massive super attacks you have to dodge or counter while you charge your own.

The quieter moments are what make it special. Side quests revisit side characters and filler favorites, including Goku and Piccolo's infamous attempt at learning to drive, and Community Boards let you slot characters into groups whose relationships unlock passive bonuses. Training sessions teach new skills, and a full RPG progression system with levels and skill trees gives the long journey a satisfying sense of growth.

For anyone who grew up watching Dragon Ball Z after school, Kakarot comes closer than anything else to letting you live inside the whole saga rather than simply fight through it. Pick it up when you want story, scenery and nostalgia as much as combat; it is the best excuse on PS4 to sit through the whole saga again, cutscene by cutscene.
