History has been tampered with, and you are the one sent in to fix it. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 builds its entire adventure around a hero of your own design, a newly recruited Time Patroller who drops into the most famous battles in Dragon Ball history to make sure they still end the way they are supposed to. Create a Saiyan, Earthling, Namekian, Majin or a member of Frieza's race, tune their look and stats, and watch them fight alongside Goku and company as if they had always been part of the story.

Conton City serves as your home base, a sprawling hub packed with shops, quest givers, training grounds and the Time Nest, where the Supreme Kai of Time oversees your work. The heart of character progression is the mentor system: train under familiar faces from across the series to learn their signature techniques, then mix and match moves to build a fighter that plays exactly the way you want. Because every move is earned from a teacher, two players' heroes can end up fighting in completely different ways.

The main story pits you against Towa and Mira, who have gathered villains from across Dragon Ball's timelines and are twisting key fights from the Saiyan arrival through the later sagas. Battles take place in wide 3D arenas where you fly, dash, block and trade ki blasts, and Parallel Quests add a deep well of side missions with their own objectives, rare drops and new outfits and moves to chase.

Developer Dimps, the studio behind the Budokai trilogy, built Xenoverse 2 as a clear step up from the first Xenoverse, with smoother combat, a bigger city and far more customization. The game was designed with online co-op and versus in mind, but its story and much of its content can be enjoyed solo. For a Dragon Ball fan who has always wanted to step into the timeline personally rather than just replay it as Goku, this PS4 release is the one built around exactly that fantasy.
