Item Description

For the better part of two decades, the most common request in any Dragon Ball game discussion was some version of “just make another Budokai Tenkaichi.” Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is the answer. The Budokai Tenkaichi trilogy, known in Japan as Sparking!, wrapped up in 2007, and Spike Chunsoft, the studio whose earlier incarnation Spike made the originals, brought the formula back in 2024 with a roster of more than 180 fighters and current-generation hardware behind every punch.

The feel is the thing. Fights play out from an over-the-shoulder camera in wide-open 3D arenas, so you can rocket across the sky, smash an opponent through a cliff face, vanish behind them and lock into a beam struggle that fills the screen. Ki management, mid-fight transformations and the split-second reads of counters and dodges give it more bite than its button-mashing reputation suggests, and destructible stages make every match look like a lost episode of the anime.

Episode Battle replays the saga through the eyes of key characters, Goku, Vegeta and Frieza among them, and includes branching what-if routes where a different decision sends the story somewhere the series never went. Custom Battle lets players script their own scenarios with dialogue and conditions, which is perfect for staging the dream matchups the roster makes possible, from Dragon Ball Z classics to Dragon Ball Super. Split-screen versus is supported for local play on one console, which brings back the after-school rivalry that made the PlayStation 2 originals so memorable, and the sheer number of forms and alternate versions means even a single character can open up a handful of different fighting styles.

Bandai Namco reported more than three million copies sold within its first 24 hours, proof of how many players had been waiting. On the Xbox Series X it is the Tenkaichi revival in its sharpest form, and the closest thing yet to playing out the show’s biggest fights exactly the way they looked on screen, from Goku and Frieza on a dying Namek to the multiverse brawls of the Tournament of Power.
