Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is the long-awaited revival of the Budokai Tenkaichi series, the trilogy of PS2-era arena brawlers that was known in Japan simply as Sparking. The name is a direct nod to that lineage, and fans who grew up launching screen-filling energy blasts across destructible fields will recognize its DNA immediately. Developed by Spike Chunsoft and published by Bandai Namco in 2024, it was rebuilt from the ground up for modern hardware, and the result is an arena fighter that feels both deeply nostalgic and thrillingly new.

On PlayStation 5, the combat is fast, kinetic and staggeringly faithful to the anime, bringing the worlds of Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super to life with the speed lines, shockwaves and crater-making impacts of the show. The roster is enormous, with more than 180 playable fighters spanning the Saiyan Saga all the way through Super, and many characters bring multiple forms and transformations. Every fighter has a distinct move set and signature moments drawn from the source material.

Battles unfold across wide, destructible stages where momentum matters; smashing an opponent through a mountain range or down to the ocean floor never gets old. The mechanics carry forward the depth the Tenkaichi games were known for: quick side-steps, reactive counters, careful ki management and cinematic ultimate attacks that make every fight play out like an episode. The Episode Battle mode retells key sagas from the perspective of characters such as Goku and Vegeta, and its branching paths open up what-if scenarios where the story can unfold very differently from the anime. Custom Battle lets players script their own scenarios, and local split-screen versus brings back the couch rivalries that made the original trilogy a sleepover staple.

More than fifteen years after the last Tenkaichi game, Sparking Zero picks up exactly where that series left off and pushes it further than its fans dared hope. For players who wore out their copy of Budokai Tenkaichi 3, it is the sequel they spent years waiting for, and the most spectacular way to relive Dragon Ball's greatest battles.
