Forget a plodding story mode: Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 turns its roster into a galaxy. In Galaxy Mode each fighter is a planet with a branching path of missions, every battle tagged with its own advantages or handicaps, and clearing them unlocks power-ups and new routes. It is a smart way to give each character's moveset a chance to shine, and with a roster announced at more than ninety characters and forms, there are a lot of planets to conquer.
Spike, the studio behind the Budokai Tenkaichi games, built Raging Blast 2 to look and feel like the anime. Fights swing between over-the-shoulder brawls and sweeping overhead angles, the scenery crumbles under heavy blows, and the signature techniques, Goku's Kamehameha, Vegeta's Final Flash and the Spirit Bomb among them, get the theatrical buildup fans expect. The new Raging Soul system adds a gamble: enter a state that locks out ki attacks but makes physical strikes hit much harder, perfect for pressing an opponent who has run out of answers.
The roster digs deeper than most Dragon Ball games, adding fighters such as Dabura, Turles, Janemba, Future Gohan, Pikkon, Nail, Hatchiyack and Tarble alongside Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Frieza and Cell. Hatchiyack is a true deep cut from a 1993 OVA, and the game goes further with its own bonus feature: a remake of that OVA, released in North America as Dragon Ball: Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans, with modern animation and roughly thirty minutes of new footage, playable right from the disc.
Critics were mixed, with complaints about the camera and the missing traditional story mode, but they also called it a clear step up from the first Raging Blast, and its visuals were praised for capturing the look of the show. The appeal for Dragon Ball fans is easy to see: an Xbox 360 arena fighter packed with rarely playable characters, Galaxy Mode challenges to grind through, and a bonus anime remake as a reward for sticking with the series.
Dragon Ball Z fans can rest assured that the destructible environment, and character trademark attacks and transformations will be true to the series. These include signature Pursuit Attacks which enable players to initiate attack combo strings, juggling your opponent in a string of devastating strikes throughout the environment. Additionally, Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 will sport the new Raging Soul System which enables characters to reach a special state, increasing their combat abilities to the ultimate level. Sporting more than 90 characters, 20 of which are brand new to the Raging Blast series, new modes, and additional environmental effects, Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 is the next evolution in the home console series.
