Item Description

Raging Blast 2 does something few Dragon Ball games dare to try: it skips the usual march through the Saiyan, Namek and Cell arcs entirely. In its place is Galaxy Mode, where every fighter on the roster is a planet of their own, each with a branching path of missions that hand out power-ups and open new routes as you clear them. It is a choice aimed squarely at people who already know the story by heart and would rather learn what each warrior can really do once the retelling gets out of the way.

The fighting is the full 3D arena combat Spike built its reputation on, with characters rocketing across wide, destructible stages, chaining melee strings, charging ki and unloading signature beams while the camera swings between over-the-shoulder and overhead views. Pursuit attacks string combos together and juggle an opponent around the environment, and the sequel's headline addition, the Raging Soul system, changes the rhythm of a match. Push a fighter into that heightened state and ki blasts are locked off, but physical attacks hit far harder, so building and spending energy becomes a real tactical decision instead of a race to the next Kamehameha.

The roster is enormous, topping 90 characters with around 20 newcomers to the Raging Blast series. Dabura, Turles, Janemba, Future Gohan, Pikkon, Nail and Hatchiyack all join the fight, and this is the video game debut of Tarble, Vegeta's mild-mannered younger brother. Beyond Galaxy Mode there are Battle Zone challenges and World Tournament brackets in both the Tenkaichi Budokai and Cell Games styles. Spike also put a piece of anime history on the disc: a remake of the 1993 OVA Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans, retitled Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans in the West, with roughly thirty minutes of newly produced footage.

Critics were split on its camera and controls, but most agreed it improved on the first Raging Blast, and IGN said it looks just like the anime, which is exactly what this game is chasing. Couch versus matches on PS3 are where it shines today: two players, a giant roster and stages that crumble under every Final Flash. If you want the Raging Blast with the deepest character select screen and a bonus anime episode on the same disc, this is the one to pick up.
