Some Dragon Ball fights are remembered as much for the craters they leave as for who walks away. Dragon Ball: Raging Blast is built around that feeling. Slam an opponent into a cliff and the rock splits, drive them into the ground and the earth gives way, and a well-aimed throw can leave a rival wedged in the terrain and briefly helpless while you line up the next attack. The arenas react to every hit, and that destruction is the first thing that makes this game feel like the show.
Developed by Spike, the studio behind the Budokai Tenkaichi games on PS2 and Wii, Raging Blast carried that free-flying, over-the-shoulder style of 3D combat onto the Xbox 360 in 2009. You rush, fly, charge ki and trade beam attacks across wide-open stages, and the HD character models shift expression mid-fight as the pressure builds. Two-character combination moves and capsule-based customization let you tune a favorite fighter to the way you like to play, and the roster runs past seventy characters once transformations are counted.
The story mode, Dragon Battle Collection, walks through the anime from the Saiyan Saga all the way to Kid Buu, and how you perform in a battle can change how a scene plays out. Alongside the canon fights sit Battle Frames, what-if matchups that never happened in the series, plus the surprise fans still bring up: an exclusive Super Saiyan 3 form for Broly, created for this game.
Critics were split at release, with the controls and the story presentation drawing most of the complaints, and it is fair to call it a first step rather than a finished formula. Still, it was Spike's first attempt to bring the Tenkaichi approach into the HD generation, and it led straight to Raging Blast 2 a year later. On an Xbox 360 today it is a loud, flashy arena brawler that rewards knowing the anime: the transformations you waited whole episodes to see, the rivalries you argued about as a kid, and a few dream fights the series never got around to staging. Pass a second controller across the couch and the old debates about who would win settle themselves.
Interactive and destructible environments bring a new layer of intensity to the battle stages featured in Dragon Ball: Raging Blast. Smash opponents into rocks to increase their damage count and gain the upper hand in battles. Featuring the series’ trademark combat style, the game hosts a variety of the most popular characters taken from the series, all of which have enhanced features such as facial expressions for a deeper level of immersion into the Dragon Ball universe. Dragon Ball: Raging Blast boasts superior graphics that enhance the sense of the characters’ speed and power. In addition to classic signature moves, characters also benefit from a new "Super Rising" move which allows more variety in the battle stages and lets players explore new areas of the Dragon Ball universe.
