For years, Dragon Ball fighting games seemed to have to choose between looking like the anime and playing like a serious fighter. Arc System Works, the studio behind Guilty Gear and BlazBlue, refused to choose. Dragon Ball FighterZ looks like the show come to life, with 3D models shaded to resemble hand-drawn animation, camera cuts that echo famous fights, and Dramatic Finishes that restage classic showdowns when the right characters meet on the right stage. Underneath all that spectacle sits one of the tightest tag-team fighters of its generation.

Matches are three-on-three, and the system is built so that newcomers can contribute right away. Auto combos string together with a single button, Super Dash rockets you across the screen, and Vanish teleports you behind an opponent for a surprise hit. Dig deeper and there is a whole second game of assists, team order, meter management and resets that competitive players spent years refining. Land enough auto combos and the Dragon Balls start appearing on screen; gather all seven during a match and Shenron grants a wish, from restoring health to reviving a fallen teammate.

The story mode introduces Android 21, an original character designed by Akira Toriyama for the game, and threads her mystery through three linked arcs told from the heroes' side, the villains' side and her own. The roster spans the whole franchise, from Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo and Frieza to Cell, Majin Buu and Dragon Ball Super arrivals like Beerus, Hit and Goku Black, and each fighter's move list is packed with signature attacks pulled straight from the series.

FighterZ went on to become a main-stage fixture at major tournaments, Evo among them, which says plenty about how well its fundamentals hold up beyond the fan service. On PS4 it is the Dragon Ball game to own if you want something that works as a fighting game first and a tribute second, while still landing every reference a longtime viewer could hope for.
