Item Description

Imagine a fighting game where your best combo is a song you wrote yourself. That is the hook of Draglade, a Nintendo DS brawler set in a world where Grapping has become the most popular spectator sport around. Fighters wield Glades, energy weapons that ring out with sound every time they connect, so a good match is also a performance. Fighting-game specialist Dimps developed it, it debuted in Japan as Custom Beat Battle: Draglade, and Atlus brought it to North America in 2007.

Matches play out in 2D arenas with free movement and platforms to leap between, closer in feel to a platform brawler than to a traditional one-on-one fighter. Every character has a signature weapon and fighting style, and on top of the regular strikes and combos you equip special moves called Bullets, collected as you play and fired off from the touch screen, so each fighter's loadout can be tuned to the way you like to brawl.

Then there are Beat Combos, rhythm-driven attacks where pressing in time with the notes is what makes them land hardest. The real twist is that you write them yourself: the game lets you compose your own combo note by note, so building a finisher becomes part songwriting and part fight planning. Reviewers reached for comparisons to Beatmania as much as to fighting games, and hearing your own melody ring out mid-fight is a thrill nothing else on the DS offers.

The story mode follows four young indie Grappers, Hibito, Guy, Kyle and Daichi, each with a storyline of their own as they chase the Major ranks. Replaying those stories unlocks hidden fighters for versus play, and IGN singled out its multiplayer options. Few fighting games before or since have let your signature attack be a melody you wrote yourself, which makes Draglade a fighter as strange as it is personal.

About the game

In the world of Draglade, Grapping has become the world's premier spectator sport. Scientists will discover how to turn atmospheric Matter into energy. Soon thereafter, a means of harnessing this energy – G-Cons – will allow for the conversion of this power into a weapon called a “Glade”. When a Glade hits something, the Glade emits a sound. Fighters and entertainers quickly realized the potential of Grapping, as the music generated by the clashing Glades in combat provided an experience that couldn't be matched in any other sport. In this world overcome by Grapping fever, four young indie Grappers – Hibito, Guy, Kyle, and Daichi – will strive to reach the ranks of the Major Grappers.
