Item Description

Night Trap made Digital Pictures infamous; Double Switch is where the studio showed it had learned something. Released for the Sega CD in 1993, it again puts you in front of a bank of hidden security cameras, this time inside an eccentric old apartment building where intruders are creeping through the halls and only you can see them coming.

The heart of the game is the switch itself. You flick between camera feeds, watch for movement in the hallways and rooms, and spring booby traps at exactly the right instant to catch whoever is sneaking past. Too early or too late and they slip away. Every trap you spring or miss nudges the live-action story down a different path, so a second and third run turn up scenes you never saw the first time, and that branching gives it more replay value than most full-motion video games of its era.

The casting is a big part of the fun. Corey Haim, the teen idol of The Lost Boys, headlines alongside Blondie's Deborah Harry, and the whole ensemble commits to the campy thriller tone with the kind of straight-faced energy that makes 1990s FMV so watchable today. It is pure early-CD-era television, staged for a player who holds the remote and the trigger at the same time.

Double Switch arrived the same year Night Trap was being waved around at the U.S. Senate hearings on video game violence, and it shows Digital Pictures doubling down on the format rather than backing away from it. The game eventually returned in a 25th Anniversary Edition, but this Sega CD release is where it all started, and the original home of the trap-'em-up at its most polished.
