Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

The title screen shouts its own name in digitized speech, the teams take the floor to the national anthem, and then someone breaks free for a slam dunk that cuts to a full-screen, close-up animation of the ball crashing through the rim. Double Dribble had a flair for showmanship that few home sports games of 1987 could match, and that sense of spectacle is a big reason so many NES players still remember it.

Konami built it from its 1986 arcade game, and the NES version keeps things fast and simple: full five-on-five basketball, four fictional teams in the Boston Frogs, Chicago Ox, Los Angeles Breakers and New York Eagles, adjustable game lengths and selectable difficulty. Passing is quick, fast breaks come constantly, and the dunk cinematics give big plays a payoff that had everyone in the room yelling at the TV.

Two-player head-to-head is where it shines. Sitting on the couch with a friend, each of you running a full five-man squad, made Double Dribble a sleepover and after-school favorite, and its quirks became part of the fun. Veterans still talk about the spots on the floor where a three-pointer seemed almost impossible to miss, the kind of shared secret that spread across playgrounds long before strategy guides were everywhere.

It brought more arcade-style broadcast flair to NES basketball than its rivals of the day, and it holds up as a quick, pick-up-and-play sports game for two. Plug it in with an old rival and the trash talk comes back within the first quarter.
